How well do those "self cleaning" cat litter boxes work?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat litter boxes

They sound almost too good to be true….what has your experience with them been?

We have had the Litter Maid ones for years and absolutely love them! If you use the right litter (a good quality brand, normally not found in wal-mart of cut rate places) it works great. We did switch from the brand we were using to the litter maid brand of litter. All the other brands do have dust (no matter what they claim, they all had dust) and also some perfume smell to them. I am asthmatic and respiratory problems, so the dust and the smell were a big problem for me. But the liter maid brand of litter does not have dust and no smell.

But here is the bad news, the new litter maid that is sold in Petsmart, Petco and those kind of places is a piece of crap. (no pun intended) All the reviews I have read from people who have bought and used it, all hated it. The motor is not quality and lasts sometimes only a month or two and then the whole unit is useless. Also the new "teeth" they went to for raking, does not clean up all the mess and at times actually can not even move the clump, so it just stalls out and doesn’t work. I am hoping Litter Maid finally gets it act together and corrects all that, cause if we ever have to go to buying the newer unit, we will quit using the litter maid cat box!

However: the older original style can still be found in some places. Some Wal-mart’s still have them. You should call ahead to see if the one nearest you has the original kind. Our store here in our town has two cases of them, but the store just 15 miles away doesn’t have even one. They sell for about $65-$75 (compared to lots more expensive price for the new ones at petco, petsmart, etc) K-mart and such may have the older ones too. (We don’t have any of those stores close to us)

If you can get one of the old original ones, I think you will be more than pleased with it.

Can I mix baking soda in with cat litter to help with odor?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat litter odor

Or would that be harmful to the cats? I have a few litter boxes, but they seam to favor one for urinating which even though it gets cleaned a lot, still has the stink. Can I mix in the Arm and Hammer, or is that dangerous?

You can mix the baking soda with the litter, it is cheaper than the products they sell specifically for litter boxes, but I don’t know if it works as well. However, what I would recommend is that you sprinkle a heavy layer on the bottom of the box, before you put the litter in. Also, {and you may already know this} if the one box is very old, you may want to get a new one, because the odor may be absorbed into the plastic and you can’t really do anything about that. BUT, if you do this, becareful and don’t remove the old one until the cats are definitely urinating in another box, or you make create a problem and find them urinating elsewhere, if you take their ‘favorite’ box for urinating away, before they have become adjusted to another. Simply put the new box exactly where the old one sat and the old one beside it. Cats are such persnickety things, you never know what they’ll like or what might tick them off, but they are sooooooo wonderful!

Is it possible to make litter boxes smell good?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: litter boxes

I have two cats and two litter boxes (as suggested by my vet). They have EXTREMELY active bladders and bowels. I clean the boxes every other day and have the air on in my house and a ceiling fan going in the room where the boxes are. But now that the hot weather is upon us, I still come home and can smell the poo sometimes. (It doesn’t help that one of my cats is litter box illiterate and doesn’t understand the covering of the poo part of the process.) Is there anything I can do to deoderize them without having to clean them every day or more than once a day? Thanks in advance!

My cat also has a very active litterbox schedule. I clean the box once a day and use Arm & Hammer scoopable litter. Sometimes he doesn’t cover the solid waste, but I’ve never had a really bad odor in the apartment. Sometimes there’s that ammonia-smell of urine, but never very strong and easily solved by scooping daily.

Also, I use the Litter Locker (like the Diaper Genie if you’re familiar with baby stuff) where you can deposit the scooped litter, turn the handle and it "locks" away the smell in this super long plastic bag. This way you can scoop for a week or more before having to empty the Locker. It’s very simple to use and not terribly expensive (I think it was around 15 bucks for the whole thing including the first set of bags, and about 8 bucks per refill). I keep it right next to the litterbox and it makes life so much easier, no searching for bags to scoop the litter into or finding holes in shopping bags that you didn’t know were there! *lol* Plus, it helps contain the smell.

CAT OWNERS PLEASE HELP with litter odor!?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat litter odor

I followed advice I found on Yahoo about the best cat litter to cover up odor and purchased Feline Pine. I put it in my 2 litter boxes for my 2 adult cats…and well, it smells better, but my cat just pooped on the bathroom rug. I’m afraid when I’m at work all day tomorrow, it will continue to happen because they don’t like the litter…what can I do now?! Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks for all of the suggestions!

I have tried an automated litter box, which my cats did not like either.

I have been using arm & hammer multi cat, with the litter deodorizer sprinkle stuff too, but maybe it is the food?
I live in a 1 BR flat apartment and scoop the boxes religiously everyday, it still stinks!

Is the litter odor caused by urine touching the plastic liner in the box?

Any recommendations for the best brand of food? I’ve always heard science diet?

Did you follow the instructions on transitioning your cats to the new type of litter?

If not, get some of their old litter tomorrow then follow the instructions on switching to Feline Pine. Cats don’t like changes. Take it slowly!

What could be the cause of my cat peeing on furniture and floors etc?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: cat litter furniture

The vet said that she needed two litter boxes and that worked. But she’s started again. Could being in heat cause it?

I have 8 cats and this started in my house. I had never had this happen before as a cat owner. We ended up putting plastic sleeves on our sofa and they have never done it on the beds, thankfully. It seems like when they do it, the spot is marked. I do let them know I am upset. The problem doesn’t happen anymore.

I had to re home one cat, I loved her so much, fed her the best food, took a ton of pictures of her. But she would do it on my bed. I had put on clean sheets, taken a shower and when I came in to crawl under my clean sheets I saw she had pooped and peed ed in my clean bed, I had to rip the bed down, mattress cover, comforter and all.

And as I sat there listening to my washer and dryer running at 1:30 am, I realized I didn’t get this cat to stress me out like it was doing. My nerves we’re shot. I had to re home her, and if others think that is a terrible thing that I did. It was a painful decision, but you do what you have to do.
