Cat Litter Boxes Blog

We have a two cats, 1 female and 1 male, both are " fixed " and are approx. 3.5 years old. We use two litter boxes for them and they have a hood on them. I change the Cat Litter once every week, I use a cheap $4 for a 25 lbs. bag of 99.9% dust-free cat litter.
Is there anything I can use ( that won’t cost a fortune ) to keep the oder down to a reasonable level ?
I check the litter boxes everyday - but our Rec Room smells like a Cat Litter Pan.
Any suggestions that are cheap yet effective to implement ???

You could try using a litter that isn’t as cheap. Regular unscoopable clay litter doesn’t do anything to remove odor, and since the urine collects at the bottom, rather than being absorbed - bacteria combines with the urine creating that lovely ammonia smell.

I use scoopable litter, and scoop them every day or every other day. About once a week I add a litter more litter to the top, and once a month I dump it all and clean the pan. My rule of thumb is if the pan still stinks after scooping - it’s time to dump it all. It lasts much longer than non-scooping varieties. I prefer the unscented litters, as do most cats who have to breathe it.

I pay $10-12 for 35lbs and it lasts for about 1-1/2 months with 2 litter pans, and never have a problem with litter box odor.

Knowing how to select cat litter is important for your cat’s health and the environment, as well. A natural cat litter may not necessarily mean a safe cat litter for your cat(s) or the environment.

My New (1 or 2 yr old) cat likes to dig to the bottom of this litter box so he pees on the box and not the sand. I’ve tried to put more sand in there but hes determined to pee on the bottom of the box. I don’t know how to get him to stop. I clean the box daily. oh and whats a good clumping/ major odor control litter?? for some reason my two cats poop smell soooooo bad. (ima try to change them to a healthy natural food but ’til then)
It always seems around the youngest of ages and then the eldest of ages, the feline’s fecal waste always ends up smelling the worst. Nothing really you can do about the natural odor of it (dieting may help a bit, but I’ve been trying myself and to no luck so far), but there is a brand that I’ve been using that helps a bit more: Fresh Step. It has odor locking crystals that eliminates the scent nearly. Having one of those dome/shelter litter boxes also helps seal in the scent so it’s not so obvious.

Now, about the digging part, well, my kitten does that as well. It’s just a funny thing with some cats. Maybe a personality tidbit.

Is this territorial, behavioral, personality quirk?

I adopted a stray cat. He isn’t fixed because I don’t have the money right now.

But he has an obsession with litter boxes and dirt. He gets into potted plants and each and ever catbox in our house and will just play in the litter. Scratch it, dig in it, roll in it, kick it all over the floor, track it everywhere. He isn’t happy until he is completely covered in litter or dirt. He does this outside as well.


He rolls in dirt and leaf litter until he is completely covered.

Some cats just like to do that. Put down newspaper around the box, it makes for an easier clean up. We had to hang our potted plants, to keep him out of them.

i live in an apartment where i rent a room. the cat is allowed to roam freely but due to my landlords having a 1 year old, the litter box stays in my room. i clean it as i should but theres still the lingering odor of cat litter in my room and id like it gone. i use the litter made for small spaces along with the baking soda deodorizer you sprinkle in the box. any help?

I use fresh step crystal litter, and its amazing.
We can stick our noses in our cats litter box and still not smell a thing.
It is a little bit more expensive then other litter, but well worth it.
We don’t have to buy any sprays or air fresheners either.

I need to know the BEST Kitty Litter to buy that controls cat odor. I have two indoor cats who use a litter box and I’m changing it at least 3 times a day. Is there any kitty litter out there that eliminates odors or at least controls them well? I’ve seen this silicone kitty litter but I’ve never tried it. I wouldn’t mind paying the extra money for something that works really well, like something I could scoop and not have to replace the entire contents. Please help.
